What Is Sever’s Disease?

Sever's disease affects growing children, particularly those who are active in sports. It occurs when the growth plate in the heel, called the calcaneal apophysis, becomes irritated or inflamed. This usually happens during periods of rapid growth, typically between the ages of eight and 14. The condition is most often seen in children who participate in running or jumping sports, as the repetitive stress on the heel worsens the problem. The primary symptoms of Sever's disease include heel pain, swelling, and tenderness, especially during or after physical activity. Children also may walk on their toes to avoid heel pain. Although it can be painful, Sever's disease is temporary and typically resolves once the growth plates close. If your active child has heel pain, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can accurately diagnose and treat Sever’s disease.

Sever's disease often occurs in children and teens. If your child is experiencing foot or ankle pain, see one of our podiatrists from Sayville Foot Care. Our doctors can treat your child’s foot and ankle needs.

Sever’s Disease

Sever’s disease is also known as calcaneal apophysitis, which is a medical condition that causes heel pain I none or both feet. The disease is known to affect children between the ages of 8 and 14.

Sever’s disease occurs when part of the child’s heel known as the growth plate (calcaneal epiphysis) is attached to the Achilles tendon. This area can suffer injury when the muscles and tendons of the growing foot do not keep pace with bone growth. Therefore, the constant pain which one experiences at the back of the heel will make the child unable to put any weight on the heel. The child is then forced to walk on their toes.

Symptoms

Acute pain – Pain associated with Sever’s disease is usually felt in the heel when the child engages in physical activity such as walking, jumping and or running.

Highly active – Children who are very active are among the most susceptible in experiencing Sever’s disease, because of the stress and tension placed on their feet.

Wearing the Right Shoe Size for Foot Health

Wearing the correct shoe size is essential for maintaining overall foot health and comfort. Ill-fitting shoes can lead to a range of problems, including blisters, calluses, and painful conditions like bunions and plantar fasciitis. When shoes are too tight, they can restrict blood flow and cause nerve compression, leading to discomfort and long-term damage. Conversely, shoes that are too loose can result in instability and increase the risk of falls and injuries. Properly fitted shoes support the natural shape of the foot, providing adequate cushioning and arch support, which helps distribute weight evenly. Investing in the right shoe size can enhance mobility, reduce fatigue, and prevent chronic foot issues. Regularly measuring your feet and trying on shoes before purchase can ensure a perfect fit, ultimately promoting better foot health and overall well-being. If you have developed foot pain from the shoes you wear, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can treat various foot conditions, and guide you on how to choose shoes that fit correctly.

It is important to find shoes that fit you properly in order to avoid a variety of different foot problems. For more information about treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Sayville Foot Care. Our doctors will treat your foot and ankle needs.

Proper Shoe Fitting

Shoes have many different functions. They cushion our body weight, protect our feet, and allow us to safely play sports. You should always make sure that the shoes you wear fit you properly in order to avoid injuries and deformities such as: bunions, corns, calluses, hammertoes, plantar fasciitis, stress fractures, and more. It is important to note that although a certain pair of shoes might be a great fit for someone else, that doesn’t mean they will be a great fit for you. This is why you should always try on shoes before buying them to make sure they are worth the investment. Typically, shoes need to be replaced ever six months to one year of regular use.

Tips for Proper Shoe Fitting

  • Select a shoe that is shaped like your foot
  • Don’t buy shoes that fit too tight, expecting them to stretch to fit
  • Make sure there is enough space (3/8” to ½”) for your longest toe at the end of each shoe when you are standing up
  • Walk in the shoes to make sure they fit and feel right
  • Don’t select shoes by the size marked inside the shoe, but by how the shoe fits your foot

The shoes you buy should always feel as good as they look. Shoes that fit properly will last longer, feel better, and improve your way of life each day.

Cracked heels, also known as heel fissures, are a common foot condition characterized by dry, thickened skin that develops cracks at the heel's edge. These fissures can be painful and may lead to further complications if left untreated. The primary causes include skin disorders like eczema and psoriasis, which can cause dryness and irritation. Lifestyle factors also play a significant role, as prolonged standing, walking barefoot, and wearing open-back shoes can contribute to the development of cracked heels. Additionally, environmental conditions like low humidity and excessive exposure to water can strip the skin of its natural moisture. Proper foot care, including regular moisturizing and wearing supportive shoes, is essential for preventing cracked heels, ensuring healthy and comfortable feet. Cracked heels can cause severe pain, and it may be difficult to complete daily activities. If you have developed this condition, it is suggested that you contact a podiatrist who can offer you prescribed medication for effective treatment.

Cracked Heels

Cracked heels appear unappealing and can make it harder for you walk around in sandals. Aside from looking unpleasant, cracked heels can also tear stockings, socks, and wear out your shoes. There are several methods to help restore a cracked heel and prevent further damage.

How Do You Get Them?

Dry skin is the number one culprit in creating cracked heels. Many athletes, walkers, joggers, and even swimmers suffer from cracked heels. Age and skin oil production play a role to getting cracked heels as well.

Promote Healing

Over the counter medicines can help, especially for those that need instant relief or who suffer from chronic dry feet.

Wear Socks – Wearing socks with medicated creams helps lock in moisture.

Moisturizers – Applying both day and night will help alleviate dryness which causes cracking.

Pumice Stones – These exfoliate and remove dead skin, which allows for smoother moisturizer application and better absorption into the skin.

Change in Diet

Eating healthy with a well-balanced diet will give the skin a fresh and radiant look. Your body responds to the kinds of food you ingest. Omega-3 fatty acids and zinc supplements can also revitalize skin tissue.

Most importantly, seek professional help if unsure how to proceed in treating cracked heels. A podiatrist will help you with any questions or information needed.

What Is a Trimalleolar Fracture?

A trimalleolar fracture refers to a specific type of ankle injury that involves three distinct bony structures. It typically includes fractures of the lateral malleolus, medial malleolus, and the posterior malleolus of the tibia. This injury often occurs due to high-impact trauma, such as falling from a height or a severe twisting motion of the ankle. The resulting instability of the ankle joint can lead to significant pain, swelling, and difficulty in bearing weight. Diagnosis is typically confirmed through imaging studies like X-rays or CT scans, which reveal the extent of the fractures. Treatment often requires surgery to realign the fractured bones and stabilize the joint. If you have fractured your ankle, it is suggested that you consult a podiatrist who can accurately diagnose and treat this injury.

Broken ankles need immediate treatment. If you are seeking treatment, contact one of our podiatrists from Sayville Foot Care. Our doctors can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Broken Ankles
A broken ankle is experienced when a person fractures their tibia or fibula in the lower leg and ankle area. Both of these bones are attached at the bottom of the leg and combine to form what we know to be our ankle.

When a physician is referring to a break of the ankle, he or she is usually referring to a break in the area where the tibia and fibula are joined to create our ankle joint. Ankles are more prone to fractures because the ankle is an area that suffers a lot of pressure and stress. There are some obvious signs when a person experiences a fractured ankle, and the following symptoms may be present.

Symptoms of a Fractured Ankle

  • Excessive pain when the area is touched or when any pressure is placed on the ankle
  •  Swelling around the area
  •  Bruising of the area
  • Area appears to be deformed

If you suspect an ankle fracture, it is recommended to seek treatment as soon as possible. The sooner you have your podiatrist diagnose the fracture, the quicker you’ll be on the way towards recovery.
